Arab Finance: In 2024, Egypt's installed solar energy capacity reached 707 megawatts, positioning it as the second-largest solar energy producer in Africa, according to Solar Energy Industry Association in Africa via SIS.
The Egyptian government has set ambitious goals, aiming for 42% of electricity generation from renewables by 2035. Hence, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development outlined an investment plan of EGP 81.4 billion for the electricity and renewable energy sector in fiscal year (FY) 2023/2024.
Amid these efforts, NoorNation, a company making significant strides in Egypt's renewable energy sector, stands out with its innovative solar-powered solutions. That is why we spoke with Ragy Ramadan, Founder and CEO of NoorNation, about the company’s role in providing both clean energy and safe water to underserved rural communities in Egypt and Africa.
He also shared insights into NoorNation’s growth achievements, strategic partnerships, and expansion plans while addressing key challenges in the renewable energy sector.
1-NoorNation has achieved significant milestones since its founding in 2021. Can you share the vision behind starting the company?
At NoorNation, our inception was driven by a goal to transform the limited utilization of solar energy in Egypt and the MENA region. Recognizing that solar applications were predominantly confined to urban grid-connected systems or basic irrigation solutions; we envisioned a broader impact.
Our travels across Egypt and various African countries revealed that the scarcity of clean water often surpassed energy shortages. This insight propelled us to develop solutions that address both challenges simultaneously to provide essential clean energy and safe water to underserved communities, particularly in the agricultural sector. ?
2- What sets NoorNation apart from other companies in the sector?
What sets us apart is our focused approach. Unlike companies that concentrate solely on energy, NoorNation delivers dual-supply, solar-powered systems producing both electricity and potable water. These systems rely exclusively on solar power, eliminating the need for batteries, diesel generators, or grid electricity.
Moreover, we pride ourselves on being both developers and manufacturers, infusing our solutions with in-depth engineering expertise to ensure longevity and superior performance.
3-Your flagship product, LifeBox, has been recognized as a top innovation. What inspired its development, and how has it impacted underserved communities so far?
LifeBox was born out of the need to create a rapidly deployable, decentralized solution that simultaneously offers clean electricity and safe water.
Our goal was to replicate the reliable energy and water infrastructure found in urban settings and make it accessible to remote communities. The result is a containerized, solar-powered unit capable of operating anywhere with sunlight.?
Since its deployment, LifeBox has significantly improved the quality of life in underserved areas by supporting agriculture, health, and daily living needs. Its impact is evident in enhanced agricultural productivity and improved access to safe drinking water.
4-NoorNation recently won the "Green Tech Startup of the Year" award for Northern Africa. What does this recognition mean for your team and your future goals?
Receiving the "Green Tech Startup of the Year" award is a testament to our team's dedication and the effectiveness of our solutions. It validates our mission to provide sustainable energy and water solutions to off-grid communities.
Beyond boosting morale, this recognition strengthens our ambition to expand our reach and continue innovating in the cleantech sector.
5-How do NoorNation’s factories in Cairo and Hurghada contribute to your mission of sustainability and industrial localization?
Our factories in Cairo and Hurghada are central to our commitment to sustainability and local industrial development. By manufacturing locally, we reduce production costs, foster innovation through engineering, and ensure quality control.
This approach supports the water-energy-food nexus solutions, achieving significant sustainable impact while contributing to Egypt's local industrialization efforts.?
6-What are the key challenges facing Egypt's energy sector today, particularly in rural areas and off-grid communities?
Egypt's energy sector faces several challenges, especially in rural and off-grid areas. These include insufficient fuel for thermal power stations, lower power quality compared to urban grids, and higher diesel fuel costs, which are predominantly used in agriculture.
These factors contribute to increased food prices and highlight the need for sustainable energy solutions in these communities.
7-The transition to clean energy is often hindered by financial and logistical barriers. How does NoorNation address these challenges for its customers?
To overcome financial and logistical barriers, NoorNation partners with local banks and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services to provide accessible financing options.
Additionally, we have developed a unique business model called Solar Irrigation as-a-Service (SiaaS), allowing farmers to use LifeBox with minimal upfront costs. They can pay for the energy used in water pumping through convenient methods like Fawry, either pre- or post-harvest.
8-With LifeBox providing both clean energy and safe water, how do you see integrated solutions shaping the future of renewable energy adoption in Africa?
Africa holds immense potential for renewable energy adoption, particularly in agriculture. With changing rainfall patterns and a growing population, machine-based (solar energy) irrigation becomes essential.
LifeBox addresses this need by offering a sustainable solution that provides both energy and water, crucial to enhance food security and buildi resilient communities across the continent.?
9-KBW Ventures recently invested in NoorNation to scale operations. How will this funding be utilized to expand your reach and enhance your offerings?
We are honored to have KBW Ventures, led by Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed, invest in NoorNation. This funding will be instrumental in building our team, enhancing operations, further developing LifeBox, and focusing on international sales. It marks a significant step in our journey to scale our solutions across Africa and beyond.?
10-Can you share insights on NoorNation’s financial growth trajectory and how you plan to achieve long-term profitability while maintaining affordability for rural communities?
In 2024, NoorNation achieved a growth of 73% compared to 2023. Our strategy for long-term profitability includes reducing production costs, expanding sales, and entering new markets such as East Africa, Morocco, and the Gulf region.
By maintaining affordability, we aim to ensure our solutions remain accessible to rural communities while achieving sustainable growth.?
11-Finally, What new innovations can we expect from NoorNation in the near future? Do you have plans to expand beyond Egypt and Sub-Saharan Africa?
Beyond LifeBox, we have developed NoorBox, a portable, plug-and-play solar generator that provides electricity for home appliances across various sectors, including residential, agriculture, and small commercial enterprises.
We have already begun exporting NoorBox to GCC countries and plan to expand further into Africa and Asia, continuing our mission to deliver sustainable energy solutions globally.?
