Arab Finance: The Sukari gold mine has produced 5.2 million ounces of gold since it began operations in 2009 until February 2023, with revenues amounting to about $7.5 billion, Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla announced on March 22nd.
During an inspection tour to the gold mine, El-Molla has inaugurated a solar power station at the Sukari mine with a capacity of 36 megawatts, in addition to a battery storage system with a capacity of 7.5 megawatts to rationalize expenses and maintain the sustainability of production.
The station contributes to reducing fuel consumption in the mine by 22 million liters annually, as well as cutting carbon emissions by 60,000 tons annually.
It is the largest off-grid station, dedicated to securing electricity for a mining site in the world.
The minister added that it is targeted to produce between 450,000 and 480,000 gold ounces in 2023.
On March 21st, El-Molla announced that trial phase of the commercial production of gold from the Iqat mine in southern Egypt has started.
