British Steel wins rail contract for Egypt’s Green Line railway

Arab Finance: The UK-based steel manufacturer British Steel has been awarded a major contract to supply rail for Egypt’s Green Line railway, the company said.

Under the contract, 9,500 tons of track manufactured in Scunthorpe will be supplied for Egypt’s Green Line railway, which spans from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.

The railway is Egypt’s first fully electrified mainline and freight network.

The network extends over 660 kilometers, and it will carry trains for both people and freight. The trains can travel with a speed of up to 155 miles per hour (mph).

“We are delighted British Steel has been awarded this contract and to be involved in such a transformational project for Egypt, which will bring significant improvements to the transport network,” British Steel Commercial Manager Export – Rail, Jérôme Bonef commented.

Two rail shipments will be transported from the British firm to Alexandria Port in April in June.

The rail will be used to extend the line from Alexandria through El Alamein to the northwestern Mediterranean coast and eastwards to the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea.
