Arab Finance: Ezz Steel is switching to desalinated seawater from the Nile River after adopting Veolia Water Technologies Egypt’s mobile water solutions that enable cooling water supply, according to an emailed press release on June 19th.
Veolia’s mobile water treatment units allowed EZZ Steel to secure 100% of their water production with lower chloride and total dissolved solids rates, making the water flow into their cooling system.
Accordingly, the leading steel producer has cut its water and chemical consumption by around 75%.
This move will help Ezz Steel to maintain its business while saving freshwater resources.
“Cooling is the primary water-consuming process in steel manufacturing plants. Veolia was able to provide an emergency response with the first phase being up and running in two months. It allowed us to reduce the use of freshwater while maintaining the steel production of our plants and reaching the required water quality,” Mohamed Bakry, Utilities Senior Manager at Ezz Steel, commented.
Both Ezz Steel rolling mills and Ezz flat steel plants used to be supplied with freshwater from the Nile River before the recent switch to desalinated seawater.
