Arab Finance: Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi affirmed Egypt’s commitment to securing an attractive investment environment for the mining sector, according to a statement.
Speaking at the High-Level Ministerial and CEO Roundtable ahead of the fifth Egypt Mining Forum, Badawi highlighted the state’s efforts to encourage global, regional, and local companies to expand their investments in Egypt.
The minister stressed the need for stronger cooperation between governments and investors, clear national frameworks, and greater use of international expertise to develop mineral resources.
He also emphasized the importance of attracting key players in the mining industry to participate across the exploration, production, and long-term development stages of projects.
During the meeting, Tanzania’s Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde outlined the country’s plans to shift from exporting raw minerals toward integrated value chains covering processing and refining.
Tanzania aims to expand high-resolution geological and geophysical surveys from 16% of its territory to 100% by 2030, helping reduce exploration risks for critical minerals including nickel, graphite, and rare earth elements, he noted.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho called for coordinating and implementing mining policies across Africa to maximize the benefits of the continent’s mineral resources.
For his part, Moses Engadu, Secretary-General of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, said discovering mineral resources is only the starting point, as successful projects require integrating geological data, infrastructure, governance, energy, technology, and financing.
Hoda Mansour, Head of AngloGold Ashanti Egypt, said recent amendments to Egypt’s mining law have helped boost investor confidence. She also urged greater access to geological data to lower entry barriers and support smaller mining companies.
Finally, the roundtable discussed deep-sea mining under the Agenda 2063 framework and ways to support artisanal mining through technical, financial, and institutional mechanisms.
