Suez Canal revenues rise 56.7% YoY in August on higher traffic

Arab Finance: The Suez Canal's revenues increased 56.7% year-on-year (YoY) to $567.1 million in August 2026 from $326 million, as vessel traffic and net tonnage recorded double-digit growth, the Suez Canal Authority's (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie said.

The canal handled 1,358 vessels during last month, up 27% from 1,070 vessels in August 2025, he added. Net tonnage climbed 51.1% to 68.3 million tons from 45.2 million tons.

Announcing the figures during Egypt’s 2026 World Maritime Day celebration in Alexandria, Rabie noted that geopolitical shifts in recent years have directly affected global trade flows and supply chains, with repercussions extending to navigation through the Suez Canal.

Responding to these developments requires unconventional solutions that enhance maritime institutions’ operational efficiency and capacity to manage unprecedented challenges, he pointed out.

Rabie also said the SCA has adopted a balanced approach based on flexible policies and a strategy focused on expanding the canal’s role in the maritime transport and services industry. The strategy includes localizing maritime manufacturing and broadening the range of services available to shipping lines.

Recent disruptions in international trade have demonstrated the canal’s role in securing global supply chains and reinforced its global standing, Rabie stressed. He confirmed that the waterway has no sustainable alternative, citing its maritime safety and security standards and supporting services.

Moreover, Rabie said the canal remains safe, navigation is proceeding regularly, its services are operating efficiently, and its pilots are maintaining high levels of performance and readiness.
