Arab Finance: The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), Orascom Construction, Norway’s SCATEC, and Abu Dhabi-based Fertiglobe have signed an agreement for a green hydrogen production project with a capacity of 100 megawatts at Sokhna Port, as per a statement on June 29th.

The project aims to produce about 13,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, which will be converted into approximately 70,000 tons of ammonia from renewable energy, TSFE’s Head Ayman Soliman said.

The implementation of the project began in 2021, focusing on developing, building, and operating a green hydrogen production plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts, Soliman added.

The conversion process of the green hydrogen takes place at Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO), with the output being exported through the project's company Misr Green Hydrogen, he noted.

The project also includes the establishment of two solar and wind power plants with a capacity of 270 megawatts to support the hydrogen and ammonia production processes, he said.

Soliman highlighted the project's success in securing a long-term agreement, the first of its kind globally, to sell green ammonia production to Fertiglobe for 20 years.

The pilot phase of the project was successfully operated during the COP27 climate conference held in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022.
