Egypt asks IMF for timeline extension to implement reforms

Arab Finance: The Egyptian government has asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an extension of the timeline for the implementation of reforms that were agreed upon under the economic reform program with the fund, a government official told CNN Business Arabic.

The implementation of the reforms will continue, but over an extended period, the official noted.

The reforms that Egypt is considering postponing are the ones that would impose the biggest burden on Egyptian households, as reducing bread subsidies and raising fuel prices increased family expenses and inflationary pressure, Capital Economics’ James Swanston said.

On October 20th, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated that the agreement with the IMF must be reviewed if it is going to put Egyptians in an intolerable situation.
