Arab Finance: The newly redeveloped Port Tawfiq Walkway, overlooking the Suez Canal, was officially opened on October 26th after being shut down for 13 years, as per a statement.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad, Governor of Suez Governorate Tarek El Shazly, and Deputy Governor of Suez Abdullah Ramadan
The revitalized walkway stretches 1,300 meters from the historic Badr Mosque to the Port Tawfiq memorial, an area with considerable historical and cultural significance.
El Shazly detailed the upgrades completed within a rapid 60-day timeframe, in close coordination with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA).
Key improvements include the restoration of the stone obelisk memorial honoring Indian officers and soldiers of World War I, and thorough cleaning, repairs, and aesthetic enhancements.
The walkway’s renovations covered interlocking walkways and gardens, extensive cleanup efforts, and replacing damaged sidewalks totaling 2,500 square meters.
Additionally, the crystal iron fencing and cement barriers were repainted, while new protective panels, gates, and a wire mesh fence were installed.
Security upgrades also included the addition of surveillance cameras along the 1,200-meter stretch, with new inspection rooms by the entry gates for enhanced public safety.
El Shazly emphasized his commitment to reviving the Port Tawfiq Walkway and memorial site as a vital public space.
As a historic Suez landmark, the Port Tawfiq memorial features a stone obelisk inscribed in English, flanked by two statues of Bengal tigers symbolizing protection, facing the Suez Canal and Port Tawfiq.
