Arab Finance: East Port Said Port has welcomed the Astrid Mærsk, a vessel powered by green methanol docking at the Suez Canal Container Terminal and APM Terminal (SCCT/APMT), as per a statement.
This comes as part of Maersk's initiative to introduce 18 green fuel-powered ships by 2025, aligning with sustainable maritime transport practices.
Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) Waleid Gamal El Dein emphasized East Port Said Port's leadership in advancing sustainability within maritime and logistics services.
Designated as the first green port in 2017 under the European Union’s (EU) and international environmental standards, the port has used eco-friendly equipment for dry bulk handling operations.
Notably, it conducted its first ship bunkering operation with green fuel e-methanol for the Laura Maersk in August 2023.
East Port Said Port handles approximately 80% of the country's total container traffic.
In 2023 alone, the port welcomed 1,563 vessels with a combined capacity of 45.5 million tons and handling 3.71 million equivalent containers.
It is also recognized as the 10th best port globally in the World Bank's 2022 port performance index.
