Arab Finance: A delegation from the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) headed by Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dein participated in the official naming ceremony of Laura Maersk, the first ship powered by green fuel in the world, according to a statement on September 15th.

The vessel’s name was announced by the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a ceremony in Copenhagen.

“Laura Maersk is a historic milestone for shipping across the globe. It shows the entrepreneurial spirit that has characterized Maersk since the founding of the company. However, more importantly, this vessel is a very real proof point that when we as an industry unite through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path toward a sustainable future emerges,” CEO of Maersk, Vincent Clerc, said.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Gamal El-Din met with Robert Mærsk Uggla, chairman of A.P. Moller and Maersk Tankers, to discuss ways of boosting cooperation between the two sides.

On August 18th, the SCZone successfully refueled the world's first methanol-powered container ship at East Port Said Port.

The vessel, owned by Maersk, has been supplied with 500 tons of green methanol by the barge Lara S, affiliated to the global service provider OCI that works in the field of supplying ships with green fuel.
