Infinity Power, Senelec join forces to supply utility-scale battery energy storage across Senegal

Arab Finance: Infinity Power, a joint venture between Egypt’s Infinity and UAE’s Masdar, has signed a 20-year capacity change agreement with Senegal-based Senelec to supply 40 megawatts (MWs) via a battery energy storage system (BESS), according to an emailed press release.

Through the BESS, Senelec will be able to stabilize the electricity grid in Senegal, which paves the way for further renewable energy growth in the African country.

The construction of the system is expected to start in early 2024 at the Tobène substation in Thies and is expected to be operational in 2025.

Once complete, the system will be one of the largest of its kind in West Africa, and it will help Senegal to avoid around 37,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Infinity Power will operate the project through Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) windfarm in Dakar.

The windfarm supplies 158.7 MWs of clean, renewable wind energy to more than 2 million people across Senegal.

The BESS is likely to save the grid in Senegal an estimated $165 million over its operating life.
