Egypt's crude steel production up 10.8% in Q1 2026

Arab Finance: Egypt's crude steel production rose by 10.8% in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, reaching approximately 2.89 million tons, accounting for 24% of steel production in the Middle East, according to data from the World Steel Association.

Meanwhile, the country’s consumption of rebar increased by 30.5% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.868 million tons in Q1 2026, compared to 1.431 million tons, as per the Arab Iron and Steel Union’s data.

In terms of rebar production, it jumped 16% to 2.263 million tons, up from 1.951 million tons in Q1 2025.

As of April 1st, Egypt imposed safeguard measures on imports of certain steel products for three years. These included 13.12% on billet at a minimum of $70 per ton, 13.7% on cold-rolled steel at $83 per ton, 14% on galvanized steel at $93 per ton, 14.5% on colored steel sheets at $122 per ton, and 13.6% on hot-rolled steel at $76 per ton.

This decision came in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 161 of 1998 and its executive regulations concerning the protection of the national economy from the effects of harmful practices in international trade.
