Egypt revokes licenses of 16 travel agencies for unregistered Hajj trips

Arab Finance: Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has ordered revoking the licenses of 16 travel agencies and referring their managers to public prosecution for illegally facilitating pilgrims’ travel to Makkah, as per a cabinet statement on June 23rd.

Madbouly has also imposed a fine in favor of the families of the pilgrims who died because of these agencies.

He noted that 31 deaths caused by chronic diseases were documented among registered Egyptian pilgrims.

However, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry pointed out that most of those who died were unregistered pilgrims.

A report shows that the high death toll among unregistered Egyptian pilgrims this year resulted from sending pilgrims by some travel agencies to Saudi Arabia on personal visit visas that do not allow holders to enter Makkah.

Thus, those pilgrims had to walk through the desert to enter Makkah which caused exhaustion due to high temperatures which was further exacerbated by the lack of appropriate accommodation.
