Arab Finance: Egypt’s glass industry has evolved recently from a primarily domestic market to a significant exporter. Despite facing economic challenges, it is poised for further expansion, driven by increasing domestic demand, infrastructure development, and a growing focus on sustainability and energy efficiency.

That is why Arab Finance interviewed Chahir Greiche, Managing Director of Dr. Greiche Glass, to explore the company’s strategic vision, its core product lines, and its ambitious expansion plans. He also shares insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the glass processing industry in Egypt.

  1. Can you provide an overview of Dr. Greiche Glass' history and how it evolved over the years to become the leading glass processor in the Middle East and Africa (MEA)?

Dr. Greiche Glass has a rich history dating back to 1986, when my father established the company's first factory, focusing solely on producing automotive glass. This initial phase lasted approximately 10 years.

The company then expanded its operations with another factory dedicated to architectural glass applications.

Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1999, and my mother took over the mission, continuing to grow the company. She successfully diversified the company further, adding the mirror line and other architectural applications.

The company also enhanced its automotive glass production capacity to better meet the market's evolving needs.

Today, Dr. Greiche Glass is recognized as the leading glass processor in MEA, providing a wide range of high-quality glass solutions across various sectors, including automotive, architectural, decorative, home appliances, lighting, and security.

  1. What is the company's mission and vision? And how do they guide your strategic decision-making?

  1. In terms of production numbers, can you elaborate on Dr. Greiche's current production capacity and how the High Glass Company acquisition might impact it?

Dr. Greiche Glass has a robust production capacity, with a monthly output of around 600,000 square meters. This capacity is distributed across multiple factories, each specializing in different product lines.

The recent acquisition of High Glass Company has significantly impacted Dr. Greiche's production capacity. The merger, which took place in April, has integrated High Glass into Dr. Greiche's operations, management, and finance.

This strategic partnership has allowed Dr. Greiche to expand its capacity in a specific product line, the back lights or back glass of cars. The addition of High Glass has increased Dr. Greiche's annual capacity by approximately 150,000 square meters, specifically in the automotive glass back light segment. This expansion is crucial to better serving the market and enhancing Dr. Greiche's position as a leading glass processor in the region.

Dr. Greiche's current annual production stands at around 7 million meters of glass, with the addition of High Glass specifically targeting the automotive glass back light segment. This strategic move positions Dr. Greiche to further dominate the market in this critical product category, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the evolving glass industry.

  1. How is Dr. Greiche strategically positioned to address the growing demand for sustainable building materials and energy efficiency?

Dr. Greiche’s strategic positioning to address the growing demand for sustainable building materials and energy efficiency is multifaceted.

The company has recently introduced special furnaces capable of tempering all heat rates with a soft coating. This coating significantly enhances the glass’s performance against heat waves and effectively isolates heat and sound within the building.

As a result, Dr. Greiche is able to manufacture this type of glass in its facilities. Notably, all new buildings in the new capital and new cities are now utilizing this type of glass, which directly improves the performance of these buildings and reduces their carbon footprint.

  1. How do you see the current state of the glass processing industry in Egypt? What are some of the challenges and opportunities you see for the industry's future growth?

The Egyptian glass processing industry is currently undergoing a period of consolidation following several years of economic challenges. This presents both challenges and opportunities for industry participants.

Given the current market dynamics, strategic mergers could be a viable path forward, enabling companies to enhance their competitive positions and capitalize on emerging growth prospects.

  1. Finally, as the Managing Director of Dr. Greiche, what is your leadership philosophy? And how do you cultivate a strong company culture that fosters innovation and success?

My leadership philosophy centers on empowering and developing our team to drive innovation and achieve success.

While I maintain a hands-on approach to ensure operational excellence, I believe in fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages employee engagement and ownership. Our company culture strongly focuses on continuous learning and development.
