Education Minister unveils plan to restructure secondary school education system

Arab Finance: Minister of Education and Technical Education Mohamed Abdellatif has revealed the ministry’s plan to restructure the secondary school and Thanaweya Amma education system for the academic year 2024/2025, as per a cabinet statement.

The new plan aims to redesign and evenly divide the scientific and cognitive content of the secondary school education system to be less overwhelming for students, the minister said.

Under the new system, first-year secondary students will study six subjects instead of 10, while second-year secondary students will study six subjects instead of eight.

As for the second-year curriculum, the second foreign language will become a pass/fail subject that does not affect the student’s overall grade and mathematics will be redesigned to be one subject.

Moreover, the third-year students will study five subjects instead seven, with the second foreign language, geology, and psychology being pass/fail subjects, in addition to redesigning mathematics to be one subject.

Additionally, Abdellatif unveiled the ministry’s plan to address teacher shortage, with a deficit of 469,860 teachers.

He pointed out that the ministry is upholding the presidential initiative of hiring 30,000 teachers annually.

He added that the ministry contracted with 50,000 part-time teachers, in addition to working on activating a law allowing teachers to work beyond their retirement age.

The minister also noted that the 2024/2025 academic year will be extended from 23 to 31 weeks, with each class period increased by five minutes.
