Egypt launches joint UN program for migrants, refugees with EU support

Arab Finance: The Egyptian government, in partnership with the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), has launched a Joint UN Program aimed at providing essential health and education services to vulnerable migrants and refugees in Egypt, as per a statement.

The €12.2 million grant from the European Union will support Egypt's efforts, focusing on enhancing protection and resilience for the most disadvantaged groups, while also benefiting host communities.

The initiative, carried out under the Joint Platform for Migrants and Refugees, will be implemented by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), and World Health Organization (WHO).

Despite growing challenges, especially following the influx of refugees from Sudan since April 2023, Egypt continues to provide critical services to refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers.

This initiative is part of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU, reaffirmed in March 2024, with both parties committed to supporting Egypt’s role in hosting refugees and protecting their rights.

The program follows the recommendations of the 2022 Common Situational Analysis on Education and Health for Migrants and Refugees.

It aligns with Egypt’s commitments to the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) and the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR).
