Arab Finance: The Egyptian government has postponed the international bidding on two key wind power plants, Zafarana and Beni Suef, Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat told Asharq Business.
The Beni Suef plant, part of a €6 billion collaboration between Siemens, Orascom Construction, and Elsewedy Electric, is one of three major power plants inaugurated in 2018, collectively generating 14.4 gigawatts.
These plants are critical to Egypt’s power infrastructure, serving the administrative capital, Burullus, and Beni Suef.
In addition to the postponement, Esmat highlighted plans to develop hybrid wind and solar power projects at the Zafarana site, which has an existing wind capacity of 545 megawatts.
Zafarana’s development began in 2001 and has seen collaboration with countries like Germany, Denmark, Spain, and Japan.
As Egypt advances its renewable energy goals, the country plans to add 22 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2029.
