Arab Finance: The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is working with China’s Huawei to localize the production of metering equipment and enhance integration between meters for tracking energy usage and detecting tampering, according to a statement on November 2nd.
The partnership was discussed in a meeting between electricity minister Mahmoud Esmat and CEO of Huawei Egypt Jim Liu along with his delegation.
This move aligns with the ministry’s strategy to reduce technical and commercial electricity losses, combat electricity theft across all sectors, improve services for customers, and upgrade electrical networks.
The meeting addressed strengthening cooperation on IT technologies for calculating electricity losses and developing a secure, resilient, and smart network to ensure a stable power supply.
They also reviewed the potential expansion of Huawei’s pilot project, which tracked consumption and losses within one of Egypt’s electricity distribution companies.
During the meeting, Esmat stated that the ministry is collaborating with private sector partners to integrate advanced technologies in electricity metering, aiming to reduce losses and enhance operational efficiency.
He added that the ministry is benefiting from Huawei’s expertise in smart networks and cities, new and renewable energy solutions, and efficient consumption monitoring systems.
