With the expansion of telecommunication infrastructure and the strong shift toward digitization, Egyptians have been actively using the internet and social media in their daily life. This trend accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, which further deepened digital engagement across the country. Social media has proven impactful in empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs and facilitating the growth of e-commerce.
In this Factsheet, we examine the current landscape of social media usage in Egypt, exploring the factors influencing different platform preferences and highlighting the most popular platforms in the country.
- By the end of 2023, the number of mobile subscribers in Egypt reached 106.3 million, resulting in a mobile penetration rate of 102.96%.
- In 2024, the number of internet users reached 82.1 million, or 72% of the Egyptian population. The average time spent on the internet by Egyptians is around eight hours per day.
- Social media users reached 45.4 million in 2024, with the average user spending around three hours on social media users daily.
- Facebook is the most popular platform in 2024, with 81% of social media users reportedly using it. Instagram and TikTok follow 2nd and 3rd, with usage rates of 68.5% and 60.4%, respectively. Known for not being popular in Egypt, Snapchat and X (previously known as Twitter) follow, with usage rates of 41.2% and 40.1%, respectively. Only 21.6% of social media users in Egypt are using the professional platform LinkedIn.
- Facebook users in 2024 reached 49.6 million, with the majority of users being males aged between 26 and 40.
- Instagram users in Egypt hit 19 million, with the majority being males aged 13 and 25 (Gen Z).
- Approximately 13 million Egyptians actively use Snapchat, with female Gen Z being the dominant segment, accounting for 24% of the platform users.
- As for messaging applications, Egyptians tend to use FB Messenger (73%) and WhatsApp (72%) more than Telegram (59%).
- Around 45% of users engage with social media to fill their spare time, while 41.6% use it to stay connected with their families and friends. Moreover, 33.7% use social media to make new contacts.
- As for application downloads, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Facebook are the most downloaded apps in 2024, whether by iOS or Android users.
