Arab Finance: Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with AngloGold Ashanti's CEO Alberto Calderon to discuss investments in the Sukari gold mine, as per a statement.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Indaba Mining Conference in South Africa, was attended by senior officials from AngloGold Ashanti and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum.
Discussions focused on finalizing procedures for the exploitation agreement initially agreed upon during the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) mission in London last December.
Calderon emphasized that the company follows the same agreement model in all countries where it operates and expressed hopes for completing the necessary steps to activate the agreement soon.
Badawi highlighted Egypt’s efforts to create a favorable investment climate in the mining sector, stressing the government’s plan to transform the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) into an economic authority to enhance its capabilities and maximize the country’s mineral wealth.
The two sides agreed to arrange a visit by AngloGold Ashanti officials to the Sukari gold mine as part of the company’s plan to increase investments and carry out further exploration and development at the site.
