  • Over the past decade, Egypt’s tourism sector faced several challenges. However, the sector showed resilient performance, with its revenues more than doubling to a record of $15.3 billion in 2024 from $7.2 billion in 2014.
  • Tourism revenues are a key source of foreign currency inflows to Egypt. In fiscal year (FY) 2023/24, tourism revenues represented 12% of the country’s foreign currency inflows, alongside key sources, including exports, Suez Canal revenues, net foreign direct investment (FDI), and remittances from Egyptians abroad.
  • The number of tourists arriving in Egypt increased remarkably by approximately 60% from 9.9 million in 2014 to 15.8 million in 2024. The government’s target is to reach 30 million tourists by 2032.
  • The majority of tourists in Egypt come from Europe, especially from Germany, Russia, Italy, and the UK. Tourist arrivals from Saudi Arabia to Egypt lead Arab countries, followed by Libya.
  • The number of tourist nights in Egypt increased by 5.5% year-on-year (YoY) to 154.1 million nights in FY2023/24 from 146.1 million nights in FY2022/23.
  • In 2023, 14,209 new hotel rooms were added, increasing the total number of available hotel rooms to 220,044.
  • All the government’s efforts to boost tourism have helped Egypt advance 22 positions in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024, moving up from 83rd place in 2015 to 61st in 2024.
