The Egyptian National Wages Council (NWC) has announced a new rise in the private sector’s minimum wage. The decision comes in response to Egypt’s challenging economic conditions and the rising cost of living, especially food prices. Starting March 2025, the minimum wages will increase by 17% to EGP 7,000 per month.
Alongside this increase, the NWC has set a minimum wage for part-time workers, enhancing labor protections nationwide. For the first time, part-time employees will be entitled to a minimum of EGP 28 per hour, in line with the Labor Law.
In this Factsheet, we will provide an overview of Egypt’s minimum wage policy and look into average wages across different sectors.
- In alignment with international standards and the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) recommendations for periodic adjustments, the minimum wage policy for the Egyptian private sector was first introduced in 2022. Since then, the minimum wages have been progressively increasing.
- In January 2022, the minimum wage for the private sector was raised to EGP 2,400 . A year later, the NWC increased the minimum wage by 12.5% to EGP 2,700 in January 2023, followed by an 11% rise in July 2023 to EGP 3,000. 2024 witnessed two increases in January and May, when the minimum wage jumped to EGP 3,500, and then EGP 6,000.
- From January 2022 to February 2025, the minimum wage remarkably increased by 192%. However, the value of minimum wage fell from $153 to $139 per month. This was due to currency devaluations and the decision to freely float the EGP.
- The ILO data showed that when the minimum wage in Egypt stood at EGP 3,500 in January 2024, Egypt ranked 57th globally in terms of average wages. However, the latest updates in the minimum wage would enhance Egypt’s position.
- In 2023, average monthly wages in Egypt reached EGP 5,005. The government and public sector had the highest average at EGP 12,401. On the other hand, the average monthly wage for the private sector was EGP 4,675.
- On a sectoral level, private IT sector workers had the highest average monthly wage at EGP 19,191, followed by financial services workers with an average of EGP 11,812, and mining sector workers with EGP 7,095.
