Egypt to sign natural gas supply agreements with Cyprus on February 17th

Arab Finance: Egypt and Cyprus will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday, February 17th, outlining terms for marketing natural gas from the Aphrodite offshore field, Asharq Business reported, citing the Cypriot Energy Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou.

His remarks followed the Cypriot cabinet’s approval of a Chevron-led plan to produce gas from the field.

Egypt and Cyprus have been strengthening energy ties since signing an agreement in 2018 to extend the pipeline linking the Aphrodite field to Egypt.

The field, with estimated reserves between 3.6 trillion and 6 trillion cubic feet, is expected to be connected to Egypt’s Zohr production facilities via a 90-kilometer offshore pipeline to transport Cypriot gas into Egypt’s national grid.

Papanastasiou also announced that the two countries will sign another agreement on Monday with the Eni-Total consortium to export natural gas from the Cronos field in Cyprus' offshore economic zone to Egypt for liquefaction and eventual re-export, according to Bloomberg.
