Arab Finance: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has inaugurated the Air Liquide Egypt factory for medical and industrial gas production in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), as per a statement.
After unveiling the plaque marking the start of operations, Madbouly listened to a briefing from Chairman of the Board of Directors of Air Liquide Brian Shetty, who explained that the project spans 25,000 square meters and involves an investment of €80 million.
The factory specializes in producing oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, with trial operations beginning in May 2024 and full-scale production starting in August 2024.
The facility has a daily production capacity of 770 tons of oxygen, 370 tons of nitrogen, and 30 tons of argon.
Shetty outlined the production stages, starting with compressing and filtering atmospheric air to ensure high purity.
The compressed air is then cooled and separated into its components—oxygen, nitrogen, and argon—which are supplied to various factories for medical and industrial use.
The chairman also highlighted a second phase of operations, where the factory will produce wafers used in solar cell manufacturing, with a capacity of up to one gigawatt per year.
This marks Egypt’s first domestic production of wafers, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and support the country’s strategy to localize key industries and expand renewable energy production.
