Arab Finance: Ministers of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib and Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk chaired the Potato Export Regulation Committee meeting for the first time, with the participation of exporters, to discuss the current export season and Egypt’s future as a leading potato exporter, as per a statement.
El-Khatib reviewed Joint Ministerial Resolution No. 187 of 2024, which governs the production, inspection, and regulation of potato exports.
The discussions aimed to ensure compliance with importing countries’ requirements and expand Egypt’s agricultural exports globally while maintaining the renowned quality of Egyptian products.
El-Khatib stressed the importance of developing a future vision over the next three to four years to facilitate investment and boost trade with key markets, particularly the European Union.
He emphasized the need for coordination among all relevant ministries and authorities to achieve this goal.
Farouk directed a study into establishing a comprehensive tracking system for potatoes, covering all stages from seeds to processed products.
He also warned against any malpractices that could harm the reputation of Egyptian agricultural exports, highlighting that potatoes are the country’s second-largest export crop after citrus fruits.
The ministers underscored the need to completely eradicate brown rot in potatoes from the Delta region to enhance Egypt’s export share and support the national economy with foreign currency.
