Why Everything's Coming Up Pistachios?

Pistachios have become a rising star in the food and lifestyle industries, gaining popularity among both consumers and farmers. Named the "Nut of the Year" in 2023, their appeal extends beyond flavor, as they align with global trends in sustainability, health consciousness, and aesthetics. From social media-driven food trends to high-fashion runways, pistachios have cemented their place as a symbol of modern consumer preferences.

In this Factsheet, we will get to know more about the drivers that made pistachio trending all over the world. We will also explore the key global suppliers, consumers, exporters, and importers, while highlighting the nut’s status in Egypt.

  • Pistachios have gained favor among farmers, especially in the USA, due to their resilience in dry conditions. Unlike almonds, pistachios have deep roots, making them drought-resistant. Moreover, pistachios do not need high-quality water, making them a more sustainable alternative in water-scarce areas like California, which is a key producer of pistachio.
  • The pistachio trend has been fueled by social media platforms, with influencers and food bloggers popularizing pistachio-based products, such as lattes, butter, and creams. Google search trends indicate a 60% increase in pistachio-related searches since 2019, reflecting the nut’s growing appeal.
  • In the 2023/2024 crop year, the world’s total supply of pistachios reached 1.26 million tons, with consumption at 1.1 million tons.
  • The USA led the world’s pistachios suppliers with a total supply of 752,300 tons, followed by Türkiye with 275,000 tons and Iran with 188,000 tons. These three countries are also the world’s largest consumers of pistachios.
  • In 2023, the USA, Iran, and Türkiye were the world’s top pistachios exporters, with export values of $2.38 billion, $534 million, and $318 million, respectively.
  • In 2024, China was the largest importer, importing $869 million worth of pistachios, followed by Germany with imports of $559 million.
  • Despite being a minor producer of pistachios, Egypt kept on track concerning the global pistachio-trends, especially in desserts. Egyptians moved from using pistachios as filling for traditional oriental desserts like baklava to Dubai Chocolate and other trendy desserts with pistachio sauce.
  • The increasing use of pistachio led Egypt’s imports to hike from $15 million in 2023 to $22 million in 2024, marking a 47% annual growth rate.
