Arab Finance: Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi took part in the 17th edition of the OMC Med Energy Conference and Exhibition, held from April 8th to 10th, 2025, in Ravenna, Italy, according to a statement.
His participation came at the invitation of Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian energy company Eni.
Badawi was a keynote speaker during the opening session, titled “The Energy Scenario,” which focused on the current energy landscape and the long-term challenges facing the Mediterranean region in its shift toward sustainable energy.
Topics discussed included the need to fund the transition from traditional energy systems to low-carbon sources, the integration of emerging technologies, and the development of sustainable energy policies.
Badawi emphasized that Egypt’s energy vision is not only focused on local energy security, but also on strengthening the country’s role as a regional energy hub. He outlined Egypt’s plan to connect East and West through a strong energy infrastructure.
He presented Egypt’s efforts to maximize the use of its natural resources and large infrastructure, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, oil refineries, pipelines, storage facilities, marine platforms, and transportation networks.
The minister also spoke about Egypt’s dual strategy of ensuring energy security while advancing energy transition goals. This includes diversifying the energy mix to expand renewable energy use and reduce carbon emissions from oil and gas.
He pointed out that natural gas, which currently makes up about 65% of Egypt’s hydrocarbon consumption, is a cleaner option due to its lower carbon emissions.
Badawi also highlighted the ministry’s strategic priorities and the many investment opportunities available in Egypt’s oil, gas, petrochemical, and renewable energy sectors.
He stressed Egypt’s commitment to boosting oil and gas production, accelerating exploration and field development, and launching investment incentives to support these efforts.
Additionally, he discussed the important role of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), in speeding up new discoveries and improving production.
