Arab Finance: Egypt procured about 4 million tons of local wheat during the harvest season that ended in mid-August, marking an increase of more than half a million tons compared to last year’s 3.43 million tons, Reuters reported, citing Ahmed Azam, head of the services sector at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
The government had targeted purchases of 4–5 million tons out of an estimated total production of 10 million tons. The procurement season ran from mid-April through mid-August.
Egypt supplements its domestic wheat supplies with around 5 million tons of imports annually to sustain its strategic reserves and the subsidized bread system.
In June, the Ministry of Supply shut down roughly 80% of wheat collection points, keeping only 75 centers across 18 governorates and fully closing facilities in Cairo, Damietta, and Port Said under Ministerial Decree No. 17 of 2025.
Official data showed that local wheat deliveries rose 18% year on year (YoY) by June 28th, reaching 3.9 million tons compared to 3.3 million tons during the same period in 2024.
