The Ministry of Education has recently announced the official exam results of secondary education students for the academic year 2022/23, with an estimated success rate of 78.8%. The students are preparing themselves to enter a new phase in their future by enrolling in universities.
In this Factsheet, we will introduce a comprehensive overview of higher education through identifying this phase’s key figures and statistics, in addition to highlighting the role of higher education in the Egyptian labor market.
- At the end of the academic year 2021/22, Egypt had a total of 65 universities, both public and private. Notably, the number of private universities was 37, exceeding the number of public universities of 28.
- Public universities and Al-Azhar University had 564 colleges with various fields, of which 51.4% were theoretical colleges and 48.6% were practical ones. On the other hand, private universities had 262 colleges that mainly focused on practical specializations.
- The Egyptian government is planning to allocate EGP 436 billion to invest in human development fields, including health, public services, and education. The part of investments directed to higher education will cover finalizing the preparations of 16 national private universities, in addition to 12 universities affiliated to public universities. Generally, the government plans to invest in 527 higher education projects in fiscal year (FY) 2023/24.
- In 2021/22, the total number of students accepted in various Egyptian universities and institutes reached 877,527, compared to 897,173 a year earlier. This figure represents a year-on-year (YoY) fall of 2.2%.
- The newly accepted students in 2021/22 raised the total number of students enrolled in higher education to 3.495 million, compared to 3.424 million a year earlier. Males dominated the enrolled students with 51%, while females made up 49%.
- The public universities and Al-Azhar University accepted 541,784 students in 2021/22, which raised the number of enrolled students to 2.449 million, or 70.1% of total students enrolled in higher education in Egypt.
- Private universities accepted 53,584 students to reach a total of 228,911 enrolled students, representing 6.5% of higher education students in Egypt in 2021/22.
- Public and Azhar universities had 106,932 faculty members and assistants. Hence, the average number of students per faculty member hit 23 in 2021/22.
- In 2021/22, the total number of faculty members and assistants reached 14,500 in private universities. The density is considerably low in private universities, as the average number of students per faculty member reached 16.
- The majority of higher education graduates in Egypt are specialized in business, administration, and law, accounting for1% of total graduates. Arts and humanitarian sciences graduates represent 15% of total graduates, while the fields of health, education, engineering, and manufacturing make up 14.5%, 12.5%, and 8.8%, respectively.
- At the end of 2022, higher education graduates in the labor force were 6.6 million and represented 22% of Egypt’s labor force. The number of employed higher education graduates reached 5.63 million, while the unemployment rate among them recorded 14%.
