Every year, as summer heats up and temperatures rise, Egyptians eagerly await the arrival of their beloved mango season. These juicy fruits not only offer a sweet treat but also provide a refreshing way to beat the heat. From lively markets to family gatherings, mangoes bring a burst of flavor and color to tables all over Egypt.

In this Factsheet, we journey through this cherished season to learn more about Egypt’s production and exports, spotlighting its position in the global market.

  • In 1832, Egypt welcomed its first mango tree, imported from India and planted in the gardens of Shubra Palace. Initially, only a handful of mango varieties were cultivated in Egypt.
  • Today, Egypt boasts over 200 diverse mango varieties, each distinguished by its unique flavor, aroma, and texture. Among the most favored Egyptian types are Awees, Fas, Taymour, Alfons, and Hendi (originating from India).
  • Egypt cultivates mangoes across a total area of 327,000 feddan, which represents 2% of the country’s cropped area. These lands produced around 1.3 million tons of mangoes in the marketing year 2022/23.
  • While mango is not an original Egyptian fruit, Egypt has joined the world’s top producers, ranking 11th with a 2.3% share of global production.
  • The Beheira governorate, including Nobaria city, is responsible for 36% of Egypt’s production with 464,724 tons. Ismailia and Sharqia follow in 2nd and 3rd places with 19.4%, and 12.5%, respectively.
  • In 2023, exported mangoes reached 72,515 tons. Egypt’s mango exports have grown remarkably by 12% year-on-year (YoY) between 2022 and 2023. The exports were valued at $117 million in 2023. The crop made up 5.3% of Egypt’s fruit exports and 3.3% of the country’s agricultural exports.
  • In 2023, Egypt acquired 3.6% of the world’s mango market, ranking as the 7th supplier, following Thailand, Mexico, the Netherlands, Brazil, Peru, and India.
  • Egypt exported its mangoes to 62 markets in 2023. Russia topped the list with exports worth $39 million, representing 33.4% of Egypt’s exports. Saudi Arabia and the UAE followed with $21 million and $12 million worth of exports, accounting for 18% and 10.3% shares, respectively.
  • In 2023, Egypt dominated the Saudi market, claiming its position as the top supplier of mangoes to the country with a market share of 55.5%.
