In 2024, Egypt’s intellectual property (IP) landscape offered significant insights into its patent and trademark protection status. According to the International Property Rights Index (IPRI), Egypt ranked 87th globally. In patent protection, the country scored 4.8, placing 89th worldwide and 5th in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
For trademark protection, Egypt achieved a score of 6.274, ranking 33rd globally and 2nd regionally. These figures reflect an evolving IP framework, highlighting Egypt’s advancements and position in both regional and global contexts.
Understanding these indicators is key to evaluating Egypt’s capacity for innovation and brand protection. Hence, this Factsheet provides a closer look at the country’s performance in registered patents and trademarks.
- According to the most recent Global Innovation Index data, Egypt ranked 52nd worldwide in 2023 for the number of patent applications and 23rd in Africa, just behind Algeria and South Africa. For trademark filings, Egypt ranked 27th globally, reflecting a growing emphasis on intellectual property and innovation.
- In 2024, the total number of patent applications in Egypt reached 1,860, marking a 11.5% decrease from the previous year. Of these applications, 68.5% were filed by foreigners residing in Egypt, while Egyptians contributed just 31.5% to the total. This highlights the significant role of international applicants in Egypt's patent landscape.
- In 2024, the number of approved or registered patents in Egypt dropped to 266 from 317 in 2023. Among these, 201 patents, or 75.6%, were granted to foreigners, while Egyptians received 24.4%.
- Among foreign patent applicants in Egypt, Americans led with a 22.1% share, followed by the Chinese at 5.4%.
- Approximately 41.5% of registered patents in 2024 were in chemistry and metals, followed by 26.2% in human needs, and 13.8% in formation and transport operations.
- Egypt received 42,538 trademark applications in 2024, a sharp annual fall of 19.5%. Egyptians came on top of all applicants with a share of 79.2%.
- Out of the 42,538 trademark applications, only 23,790 trademarks were granted in 2024, with Egyptians securing 19,099 trademarks, or 80.3%. Meanwhile, American applicants received 6.3% of the granted trademarks and Emirati applicants 2.2%.
