Arab Finance: Egypt has inaugurated the first trip of the Egyptian-Italian RoRo shipping line, connecting Damietta Port to Trieste, Italy, marking a significant step in enhancing Egypt's role as a regional transportation and logistics hub, as per a statement.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s vision to position Egypt as a central logistic player between Europe and Africa.
Madbouly noted that the RoRo line would strengthen trade ties, improve access for Egyptian industrial and agricultural exports to European markets, and foster collaboration in transportation and logistics.
The project aims to reduce shipping costs and transit times, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian products.
Shipments will take just two and a half days between Damietta and Trieste, compared to six days using traditional methods.
The line is expected to generate over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, benefiting employees in transportation companies, shipping agencies, and drivers.
Additionally, it will leverage European expertise in land transport, contributing to economic growth and facilitating the flow of goods between regions.
Egyptian exports, including fruits, vegetables, and industrial goods, will now have easier access to European markets.
The shipment will travel from Damietta to Trieste, then to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with further distribution to England and Belgium via dedicated freight trains and land transport.
Italian and European products will similarly benefit from enhanced access to African and Middle Eastern markets through Egypt’s strategic position.
The first vessel, OLYMPOS SEAWAYS, arrived at Damietta Port on November 24th, 2024, carrying 118 containers and equipment weighing a total of 743.5 tons.
On its return trip, the vessel will transport goods such as fruits, vegetables, and textiles, arriving in Trieste on December 4th, 2024.
The RoRo line will operate weekly, with ships arriving in Damietta every Thursday and departing for Trieste every Friday.
