Arab Finance: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly officially inaugurated the Abydos 1 Solar Power Plant in Kom Ombo, as per a statement.
Built on a 10-square-kilometer area, the plant has a capacity of 500 megawatts.
With $500 million in investments, the project was funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Chinese company Power China served as the main contractor.
The plant comprises over 1 million solar panels, 1,920 sub-transformers, and 64 transformer stations. It also features two of the largest main transformers in Africa and the Middle East, each with a capacity of 300 megawatts and weighing 255 tons.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of UAE-based AMEA Power, said the plant will provide electricity to 256,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 760 tons annually.
Construction works at the plant began in March 2023 and were carried out by a mostly Egyptian team, with 95% of administrative roles and 100% of labor positions filled by Egyptians, he added.
Al Nowais also noted that AMEA Power’s investments in Egypt's renewable energy sector exceed $2 billion. These include the Abydos 1 solar plant with a 300-megawatt-hour battery storage system, the 500-megawatt Amunet wind farm, the 1,000-megawatt Abydos 2 solar plant, and a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS).
