In 2023, Egypt emerged as the leading recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa, attracting $9.8 billion, which constitutes 19% of the continent's total FDI inflows, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) World Investment Report 2024.
South Africa followed with $5.2 billion, accounting for 10% of Africa’s FDI. Ethiopia secured $3.3 billion, representing 6% of the total, while Uganda garnered $2.9 billion, equivalent to 5%.
Senegal also received significant investment, with $2.6 billion, making up 5% of the continent’s FDI inflows.
The data also revealed that FDI inflows into Egypt dropped by 13.6% year on year (YoY) to $9.841 billion in 2023 from $11.4 billion in 2022.
