Egypt's postal services have a long and storied history, transforming over the centuries from traditional mail delivery systems into a modern, efficient network that supports both local and international communication and commerce. As an integral part of the nation's infrastructure, these services play a pivotal role in linking individuals, businesses, and government institutions across the country.

This factsheet provides an overview of the key components of Egypt's postal sector, including its current infrastructure, range of services, and recent developments. Through this analysis, we aim to offer a clear picture of the sector’s performance during the fiscal year (FY) 2023/24.

  • In 2023, Egypt ranked 21st globally and 2nd among Arab countries in the number of permanent post offices.
  • In FY2023/24, the total number of post offices increased to 4,643, up from 4,412 in the previous FY, marking an annual growth rate of 5.2%. On average, each post office serves an area of 221,66 square kilometers and covers around 2.54 million inhabitants.
  • El Sharqia governorate had the highest number of post offices, totaling 421, followed by Cairo with 390 offices and Dakahlia with 313 offices.
  • The total number of employees across post offices reached 36,301, with male employees making up 77% and females 23%.
  • The number of Postal Saving Fund accounts reached around 21.58 million, with EGP 121.5 billion in cash deposits. However, the value of deposits declined by 7% year-on-year (YoY). On the other hand, withdrawals amounted to EGP 133.6 billion during the year.
  • Egyptians conducted around 8.6 million deposit transactions to their current accounts in FY2023/24. These transactions increased the total current account deposits at Egypt Post by 51.6% YoY, hitting EGP 249.5 billion.
  • The number of pensions disbursed by post offices reached 59.1 million in FY2023/24, a slight decrease from 59.3 million in FY2022/23.
  • Post offices disbursed pensions worth EGP 179.5 billion in FY2023/24, compared to EGP 140.5 billion in FY2022/23, representing a 27.8% annual growth rate.
