Arab Finance: Visa, a global leader in payments, highlighted a growth in Egypt’s digital payments landscape, especially among small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), according to a new report.
Titled ‘Value of Acceptance: Understanding the Digital Payment Landscape in Egypt’, the report indicated that 53% of merchants surveyed have implemented digital payments in the last two years.
It added that 55% of cash-only merchants are interested in adopting the technology.
Additionally, the report pointed out that over 80% are satisfied with the card acceptance process. More than three-fourths address a positive impact on revenue, while more than two-thirds report the same for footfall.
The SMEs sector in Egypt aims to boost value-added services and integrated solutions that go beyond basic transactions, such as loyalty programs, enhanced security, and access to data-driven insights.
This can help drive business growth, improve customer experience, and enhance operational efficiency.
Regarding the cash-only SMEs, the report highlighted a demand for simple, user-friendly digital solutions that facilitate cash transactions. It also reflected on educational programs that address misconceptions and incentives, supporting the transition to digital payments.
Around 77% of the surveyed SMEs believe that digital payment technologies will power business growth, with 55% of Egypt’s cash-only merchants planning to acquire point-of-sale (POS) systems.
As for Egypt’s thriving e-commerce market, the industry is injecting investment in digital payment, with 59% surveyed merchants newly embracing online payments and 53% accepting payments via social media.
In conclusion, Egypt’s SMEs play a vital role in fostering the digital payments ecosystem, as more businesses recognize their contribution to customer convenience, retention, and sales.
